Schools admission policy has been a matter for debate recently, with the UK government saying that some schools in England may be breaking the law in the way they admit pupils, despite the introduction of new rules in 2007. In 2005/06, 3.7% of all applications for admission to schools went to appeal following application refusal. In response to such growing figures, the Schools Admissions Appeal Code has been produced to help bring greater clarity, consistency and independence to the appeals process. Those with the power to influence how the appeals process works at a local level have a duty to act in accordance with this Code, and it is therefore compulsory reading for teachers, administrators, Local Education Authority policy makers and parents alike.
